Heathrow Airport is bracing for disruptions as 800 workers, represented by the union Unite, have announced plans to strike for a week in protest against the outsourcing of jobs.

The strike, scheduled from 7 to 13 May, comes as a response to what Unite describes as “deplorable action” from the airport’s management, which is reportedly seeking to outsource roles including passenger services, trolley operations, and security guards by June.

Unite’s general secretary, Sharon Graham, condemned Heathrow Airport’s actions, accusing the management of prioritizing profits over the welfare of its workforce. Graham emphasized the union’s commitment to defending its members’ jobs, pay, and working conditions, promising unwavering support during the dispute.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for Heathrow Airport defended the reorganization of operations, stating that the changes aim to enhance customer service without resulting in job losses. The airport management assured customers that they would continue to operate smoothly despite the looming strike, emphasizing their track record of maintaining operations during previous challenges.

This strike action follows a 72-hour walkout on 4 May involving 50 refueling staff, signaling growing tensions between Heathrow Airport and its workforce.

As negotiations between Unite and Heathrow Airport continue, passengers traveling through the airport during the strike period are advised to check for updates and allow extra time for potential disruptions to their travel plans.

The outcome of the dispute will likely have significant implications for both Heathrow Airport and its employees, underscoring the ongoing debate surrounding workers’ rights and outsourcing practices in the aviation industry.
