AirAsia has announced plans to discontinue its direct flights between Kuala Lumpur and Nairobi, ending its short-lived venture into the African market.
Launched in November 2024, the service marked AirAsia’s first entry into Africa, with four weekly flights operated by an Airbus A330-300, accommodating up to 285 passengers. However, citing lower-than-expected demand, the airline confirmed that operations on the route will cease on September 1, 2025.
Flights will continue as scheduled through the end of August, with affected passengers eligible for full refunds or future flight credits.
Despite the setback, AirAsia emphasized that it remains open to revisiting the Nairobi route should future demand improve. Previously, the airline had also expressed interest in expanding into other African destinations such as Johannesburg and Cape Town, although no further African routes have been announced.
The move reflects the challenges airlines face when venturing into new markets, especially across long-haul international sectors.
