Etihad Airways is redefining premium air travel by introducing first-class luxuries into its upcoming Airbus A321 long-range (A321LR) aircraft. Departing from the grandeur of its Airbus A380’s “Residence” — a three-room suite complete with a personal butler — the Abu Dhabi-based carrier is now compressing upscale amenities into the more compact A321LR, set to join the fleet within months.

Despite the smaller size, Etihad’s new narrow-body aircraft will feature sliding privacy doors, lie-flat seats, and expansive in-flight entertainment screens. This move reflects a broader industry trend where single-aisle workhorses like the Airbus A320 family and Boeing 737 are encroaching on roles traditionally dominated by wide-body jets, catering to long-haul passengers demanding higher comfort levels.

Other airlines, such as Iberia and JetBlue, have already adapted their narrow-body fleets for premium transatlantic routes, offering business-class cabins with full-flat beds. However, Etihad is pushing boundaries by offering a true first-class experience. Passengers in the exclusive first row will benefit from a “land and leave” service for expedited baggage handling and a limousine transfer directly to and from aircraft parked remotely.

Etihad plans to integrate 10 A321LRs into its fleet this year, with destinations including Paris, Phuket, Riyadh, and Zurich — redefining long-haul travel comfort aboard smaller jets.
