Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV), a prominent British airship company, is actively considering the implementation of airship trips between Malta and Gozo, signaling a potential breakthrough in transportation for the region.

HAV specializes in the development of the Airlander 10, a unique hybrid aircraft that merges buoyant lift from helium with engine power for take-off and landing. This innovative design enables the Airlander 10 to accommodate up to 100 passengers or a payload of 10 tonnes.

Confirming the interest, a spokesperson for HAV disclosed ongoing discussions with Transport Malta regarding the possible commencement of airship services between the two Maltese islands. The company perceives the Airlander 10 as a promising solution to introduce new routes that might not be feasible with conventional fixed-wing aircraft.

The introduction of the Airlander 10 could potentially yield substantial environmental benefits, with emissions reductions of up to 90% compared to traditional transportation modes. Moreover, the airship’s adaptability allows it to operate from various surfaces, eliminating the necessity for conventional runways.

In terms of passenger experience and infrastructure, HAV envisions the establishment of purpose-built terminals for Airlander operations, offering passengers a serene and comfortable travel experience. Onboard amenities would include ample space for socializing, working, dining, and relaxation, complemented by the aircraft’s low vibration and abundant natural light.

Despite the promising prospects, challenges such as infrastructure requirements and safety considerations persist. HAV has encountered setbacks in the past, including incidents during test flights. However, the company is dedicated to addressing these challenges and advancing the development of the Airlander 10.

Looking ahead, HAV remains optimistic about the commercial viability and potential of the Airlander 10. With ongoing discussions with regulatory authorities and stakeholders, the company aims to redefine air travel in the region and establish the Airlander as a sustainable and efficient mode of transportation between Malta and Gozo.
