Willie Walsh assumed the position of Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in April 2021, becoming the eighth individual to lead the organization.

With an illustrious career solely dedicated to the aviation sector, Walsh’s journey began as a cadet pilot with Aer Lingus in 1979. Over the years, he ascended through the ranks, eventually attaining the role of Chief Executive at Aer Lingus in 2001. Following this, in 2005, he was appointed Chief Executive of British Airways (BA), where he steered the company through the tumultuous global financial crisis of 2008/09.

During his tenure at BA, Walsh spearheaded transformative initiatives, including the establishment of a transatlantic joint business venture with Iberia, Finnair, and American Airlines. Furthermore, he orchestrated the historic 2011 merger of British Airways and Iberia, forming the International Airlines Group (IAG), where he served as Chief Executive from its inception until September 2020.

At the helm of IATA, Walsh has focused on guiding the aviation industry through the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, he has championed the sector’s commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050, aligning with global sustainability goals.

Walsh’s leadership extends beyond his role at IATA; he has a rich history of involvement with the organization, having served on the IATA Board of Governors from 2005 to 2018. Notably, he assumed the position of Chair from 2016 to 2017, further solidifying his deep understanding of the industry’s intricacies and challenges.

Born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1961, Walsh is a proud citizen of Ireland. He holds a Master of Science and Business Administration from Trinity College, Dublin, underscoring his academic prowess and commitment to excellence in the field of aviation.
