Airline Aims for Expansion Amidst Strategic Partnerships with Leading Aerospace Companies

Turkish Airlines (THYAO.IS) has initiated discussions with both Airbus (AIR.PA) and Boeing (BA.N) regarding the acquisition of 235 aircraft as part of its ambitious expansion strategy, according to Chairman Ahmet Bolat’s announcement on Monday.

The airline’s long-term fleet plan, unveiled last year, outlines its intention to grow its fleet by nearly 600 planes. In December, Turkish Airlines inked a significant deal with Airbus for 355 firm and optional orders for A321 narrow-body and A350 wide-body aircraft, marking a pivotal step in its fleet expansion efforts.

“We are currently in negotiations with both Airbus and Boeing for the remaining 235 planes,” stated Bolat during an event held in Istanbul, which was attended by representatives from Airbus and Rolls-Royce (RR.L).

Highlighting Turkish Airlines’ commitment to maintaining a balanced approach between Airbus and Boeing, Bolat emphasized that the airline is patiently awaiting the resolution of challenges faced by Boeing before finalizing its decision. Boeing recently experienced production slowdowns following a mid-air blowout incident involving one of its aircraft in January.

In addition to its aircraft procurement plans, Bolat revealed that Rolls-Royce is exploring the possibility of establishing maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) capabilities in Turkey, as well as expanding its supply-chain sourcing within the country.

The event served as a platform to unveil a strategic program developed by Turkish Airlines in collaboration with Airbus and other aerospace companies in Turkey, aimed at fostering the growth and development of the Turkish aerospace industry.
