HIA boosts China-Qatar connectivity with China Southern Airlines inauguration
Hamad International Airport (DOH) has ushered in a new era of connectivity between China and Qatar with the inauguration of China Southern Airlines’ four weekly flights from Guangzhou to Doha. This development follows the codeshare agreement between Qatar Airways and China Southern Airlines announced earlier this year.
Starting from April 22, 2024, China Southern Airlines commenced operations on the Guangzhou-Doha route using a Boeing B787-9 aircraft with a seating capacity of 203. This addition complements Qatar Airways’ existing services to seven major cities in China, including Beijing, Shanghai, and Hangzhou, among others, offering travelers over 27,000 weekly seats to and from Doha through Hamad International Airport.
China Southern Airlines, one of China’s largest carriers, operates a vast network of around 3,000 daily flights to over 200 destinations worldwide. Its arrival at Hamad International Airport marks a significant milestone as the airport’s second Chinese airline, following Xiamen Airlines, and the fourth airline to commence operations in 2024, joining Akasa Air, Japan Airlines, and Garuda Indonesia.
Sujata Suri, Senior Vice President of Finance and Procurement at Hamad International Airport, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, highlighting China’s strategic importance in the aviation and tourism sectors. The introduction of China Southern Airlines’ flights is expected to bolster trade ties, accommodate the anticipated increase in passenger traffic, and enhance connectivity between China, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
The collaboration between China and Qatar reflects the importance of robust air connectivity in facilitating travel demand, especially amidst the ongoing recovery in the travel sector. The addition of China Southern Airlines is poised to stimulate tourism, foster trade relations, and strengthen business ties between the two countries.
Hamad International Airport’s commitment to expanding its network underscores Qatar’s dedication to enhancing its tourism sector in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030. With a focus on innovative air service development, the airport continues to lead the aviation industry, offering passengers unforgettable travel experiences and contributing to Qatar’s position as a global aviation hub.
