UAE Champions Sustainable Aviation at IATA AGM 2024: Pioneering Green Technologies and Reducing CO2 Emissions

Dubai, June 4, 2024 – Speaking at the 80th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the World Air Transport Summit, Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, UAE’s Minister of Economy, reaffirmed the nation’s dedication to the sustainable evolution of the aviation industry amidst growing climate concerns.

In his keynote address, Abdullah bin Touq highlighted the historical significance of the aviation sector in fostering global connectivity and economic development. He noted, however, that the sector poses significant challenges in terms of decarbonisation, contributing 2.5% to global CO2 emissions and approximately 4% to global warming.

“Sustainability is not a choice but a necessity,” emphasized the minister. He called for a unified approach involving both government and private sector contributions to enhance funding and infrastructure for sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) and other green technologies.

The UAE is a pioneer in adopting a sustainable aviation agenda, transitioning from an oil-based economy to a low-carbon model. Abdullah bin Touq stated that the non-oil sector now accounts for over 74% of the UAE’s GDP as of 2023. He also announced the launch of the National Sustainable Aviation Fuel Roadmap, which aims to produce 700 million litres of SAF annually by 2030, potentially reducing CO2 emissions by 4.8 million tonnes.

The National Sustainable Aviation Fuel Roadmap marks a significant stride in the UAE’s efforts to lead global aviation sustainability. This ambitious initiative underscores the UAE’s commitment to reducing the aviation sector’s carbon footprint by fostering the production of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). By targeting an annual production of 700 million litres by 2030, the roadmap not only aims to slash CO2 emissions by 4.8 million tonnes but also positions the UAE as a regional hub for green aviation technologies. This forward-thinking strategy is expected to catalyze innovation, attract investments, and set new standards in environmental stewardship within the aviation industry.

The minister pointed to the need for technological advancements in aviation, such as more fuel-efficient aircraft and alternative propulsion systems, including electric, hybrid-electric, and hydrogen engines. He reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to collaborating with the private sector to achieve these sustainability goals, positioning the country as a leader in sustainable aviation.
