Ethiopian Airlines CEO Mesfin Tasew has disclosed that Nigeria’s Ministry of Aviation owes the airline $211,000 for breaching contract terms related to the collapsed Nigeria Air joint venture.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of Nigeria is investigating the alleged misappropriation of 2.7 billion Naira allocated to the project. Mesfin and other Ethiopian Airlines officials have been interviewed as part of the probe, explaining that the partnership terms, established during former Nigerian aviation minister Hadi Sirika’s tenure, were not honored.
New Nigerian aviation minister Festus Keyamo has indefinitely suspended the Nigeria Air project, claiming it was merely Ethiopian Airlines attempting to fly the Nigerian flag rather than a genuine national initiative.
The Nigeria Air project, initiated under former minister Sirika and former President Muhammadu Buhari, aimed to establish a national carrier in partnership with Ethiopian Airlines and Nigerian investors. The EFCC has since charged Sirika and his family members with corruption involving the 2.7 billion Naira related to the project.
