Boeing’s Big Bet on India

In a significant move reflecting broader geopolitical trends, Boeing is dramatically increasing its engineering recruitment in India, pivoting away from China as the United States seeks to reduce its dependence on Chinese expertise.

As of July 31, the Boeing Careers website listed just five job openings in China, three of which were for engineering positions. In stark contrast, India had 83 job openings, with 58 focused on engineering. This trend is evident in Boeing’s current workforce distribution, with around 2,200 employees in China compared to over 6,000 in India, despite India’s smaller commercial aviation fleet.

Boeing’s shift is notable given its historical reliance on Chinese talent, exemplified by Wong Tsu, the company’s first aeronautical engineer from Beijing. Wong’s significant contributions to Boeing’s early success are well-documented, including his role in designing the Model C naval training seaplane.

Boeing’s engagement with the Chinese aviation market began in the early 1970s but has faced challenges, particularly following two 737 Max crashes in 2018 and 2019. Although Boeing has resumed 737 Max deliveries to China, the company’s relationship with the Chinese market remains complex, especially as China advances its domestic aviation capabilities with the Comac C919.

As Boeing navigates these challenges, it is increasingly focusing on India, which offers a growing pool of engineering talent and a rapidly expanding aviation market. India, the world’s third-largest domestic airline market, is projected to need 2,835 new aircraft deliveries by 2043. Boeing has responded by investing in its largest facility outside the U.S. in Bengaluru and planning a new logistics center in India.
