Airbus Helicopters Sets New Speed Target for Racer Compound Helicopter

Airbus Helicopters has set a new cruise speed target of 240 knots (444 km/h) for its Racer compound demonstrator, surpassing its earlier goal. The airframer’s Racer project, which aims to revolutionize helicopter speed and efficiency, has already reached 227 knots during testing, well ahead of schedule.

Racer chief engineer Brice Makinadjian revealed that the helicopter has proven more fuel-efficient than expected, with almost 30% fuel savings compared to conventional helicopters of similar size. The Racer is currently preparing for its second flight-test campaign, which is expected to push the aircraft even further in terms of speed and fuel performance.

Upcoming modifications include the installation of a low-drag main rotor fairing and landing gear doors, which are projected to reduce drag by 25% and enhance overall efficiency. With these upgrades, the Racer is expected to significantly outperform traditional helicopters in both speed and fuel consumption.

In addition to testing speed, Airbus Helicopters will also focus on mission demonstrations for civil and military applications during the next phase. These tests will highlight the Racer’s potential for roles like search and rescue, inter-city shuttles, and even military operations, showcasing its agility and real-world utility.

Designed under the EU’s Clean Sky 2 program, the Racer is built to meet rigorous operational standards, making it closer to a serial production helicopter. Airbus Helicopters plans to certify the Racer under the European Union Aviation Safety Agency’s CS-29 regulations, further demonstrating its commitment to advanced rotorcraft development.
