Cambodia Embraces Sustainability in Luxury Tourism
Cambodia’s luxury tourism sector adapts to new digital and environmental demands in 2024, facing cybersecurity challenges and a push toward sustainable travel experiences.
In 2024, Cambodia’s luxury tourism industry is experiencing a shift as it embraces sustainability and digital evolution. This year has brought new challenges, including increased cybersecurity threats, and opportunities for growth as businesses focus on eco-friendly practices and digital engagement. Hotel operators across the nation report the rising importance of cybersecurity, with phishing attacks and fake bookings creating operational hurdles. Staff training and robust security measures are now essential to safeguard guest data and maintain seamless operations.
Leaders in the industry highlight that a strong online presence has become indispensable. Alexandre Rebibo, an operator of resorts on Koh Rong, emphasized that his properties face constant cyber threats, requiring continuous vigilance. Similarly, Alexander Scheible, manager of a Phnom Penh urban resort, pointed out the growing risks in managing guest data online and the need for staff to stay updated on scam tactics.
Despite these challenges, digital channels remain critical for growth, and online reviews, social media, and booking platforms are key to attracting guests. The shift in traveler behavior post-pandemic has led to more independent, short-notice bookings, pressing hotels to adapt and provide responsive, streamlined experiences.
Sustainability is another focal point as travelers increasingly prefer eco-friendly options. Koh Rong resorts, for instance, have introduced refillable water bottles and weekly beach clean-ups to promote environmental care. Rebibo noted that guests value authentic, serene experiences that connect them with nature.
Scheible highlighted that while European tourists often prioritize sustainable practices, awareness varies globally, and there is still work to be done to embed sustainability industry-wide. However, Cambodian hotels are uniquely positioned to lead in eco-friendly tourism, showcasing their commitment to the environment while enhancing the country’s appeal as a global destination.
