Indra Group has taken a monumental step in air traffic management by partnering with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace AS to provide air traffic control services for 23 airports in Norway from a single location in Bodø. This breakthrough represents a significant evolution in the management of smaller airfields, which are becoming increasingly vital for handling air traffic and easing congestion at major airports.
Small airfields have long been overlooked, but they play a crucial role in providing access to remote areas, supporting services like medevac, and relieving pressure from larger airport hubs. The global aviation landscape is shifting, and smaller airports are being seen as a critical part of the future of air travel.
Indra’s innovative InNOVA air traffic control system makes it possible for one operator to remotely control multiple airfields, offering the same flexibility and efficiency as larger airports. Currently, the system is being utilized at the Remote Tower Centre at Bodø, which boasts 16 control stations and can manage up to 48 airports simultaneously.
This technology not only enhances air traffic control capabilities for small airfields but also significantly reduces costs, ensuring that remote and low-traffic airports can operate efficiently without the need for expensive on-site staffing.
