Norwegian Air Shuttle has announced a significant move to purchase 10 Boeing 737-800 aircraft that are currently part of its leased fleet. The transaction, which is set to be completed by the end of the first quarter, will initially be financed through the airline’s cash reserves. However, Norwegian plans to explore long-term financing options after the deal is finalized.

The airline’s CEO, Geir Karlsen, explained that the purchase is expected to generate both short-term and long-term cost savings, as well as provide flexibility in future fleet planning. While Norwegian did not disclose the price of the aircraft or the leasing companies involved, it did reveal that the deal is expected to bring in a non-recurring gain of approximately 570 million Norwegian crowns ($50.7 million). This gain reflects favorable pricing terms and a reduction in existing lease liabilities.

Additionally, the airline anticipates that the deal will lead to recurring savings of about 200 million crowns annually, after accounting for financing costs. The purchase represents a key strategy for Norwegian as it strengthens its position in the market and optimizes its fleet management approach.
