Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Bengaluru has introduced India’s first-ever sensory room, designed to support passengers with autism, anxiety, and sensory sensitivities. Located near the 080 International Lounge in Terminal 2, the space provides a calming environment to help neurodivergent travelers feel more at ease before their flights.
Airports can be overwhelming due to bright lights, constant announcements, security checks, and crowds, making travel challenging for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), anxiety, PTSD, and other mental health conditions. Recognizing these challenges, Bengaluru Airport has collaborated with Incluzza, a disability inclusion organization, to develop a sensory-friendly space backed by behavioral science and occupational therapy research. Studies show that spending time in such environments can lower stress levels and improve overall well-being, leading to a smoother travel experience.
The sensory room is equipped with various features to create a soothing atmosphere. It includes ambient lighting like a bubble tube, galaxy projector, and LED cubes, along with interactive elements such as floor and wall projections, a ball pool, and a sensory toy station. Additionally, relaxation aids like weighted blankets, crash pads, and therapy mats help travelers regulate their emotions, while visual and tactile features, including optical curtains, infinity mirrors, and tactile wall panels, offer a comforting sensory experience. The room also incorporates auditory elements like a white noise machine and calming sound system, as well as stress-relief tools such as a balance board, lava lamp, and aroma diffuser.
By introducing this initiative, Bengaluru Airport is setting a new benchmark for accessibility in Indian aviation. This sensory-friendly space ensures that all travelers, regardless of their needs, can have a more comfortable and stress-free journey. The move serves as a model for other airports across the country to adopt similar measures, making air travel more inclusive for everyone.
