Kuwait’s aviation sector is facing turbulence following the sudden dismissal of Kuwait Airways CEO Ahmad al-Kreebani. The leadership change comes as 14 major international airlines have exited operations at Kuwait International Airport, highlighting deeper challenges within the country’s aviation industry.
Ahmad al-Kreebani, who had been at the helm since late 2022, was removed from his position amid concerns over governance and operational inefficiencies. Abdulwahab Al-Shatti has been appointed as the new CEO, taking over at a critical moment.
Adding to the woes, prominent airlines such as British Airways, Lufthansa, Air France, KLM, and Singapore Airlines have recently suspended flights to Kuwait, citing economic non-viability, poor infrastructure, and slow passenger growth. While other Gulf hubs continue to thrive, Kuwait International Airport saw a 1% decline in passenger traffic in 2024, dropping to 15.4 million passengers.
Infrastructure issues have been a major concern. Delays in the Terminal 2 project and outdated main terminal facilities have left Kuwait lagging behind competitors like Doha, Dubai, and Riyadh, all of which offer modern amenities and seamless travel experiences.
Without significant investment and strategic reforms, Kuwait risks losing its relevance in a region where aviation is a cornerstone of national growth.
