Singapore has introduced passport-free travel for certain travelers crossing its land border with Malaysia. Starting Tuesday, individuals traveling by car can present self-generated QR codes instead of handing over passports at two checkpoints. This measure is expected to expedite immigration clearance by over 30% without compromising security, as stated by Singapore’s Immigration & Checkpoints Authority.

Eligible individuals, including Singapore residents and foreign travelers, can generate QR codes using the MyICA mobile app. Group codes for up to 10 passengers in the same vehicle are also available. However, this QR-code clearance is not applicable to first-time visitors to Singapore or those using a different passport from previous visits.

The initiative aims to save time, with estimates suggesting a reduction of around 20 seconds for cars with four passengers and up to one minute for those with 10 individuals. Singapore’s Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints, linking Johor Bahru in Malaysia to Woodlands, are among the world’s busiest border crossings.

The program is part of Singapore’s broader efforts to modernize border control and security procedures, addressing the challenges posed by an aging workforce and increasing traveler volumes. Plans include extending QR code clearance to travelers using other modes of transport at a later stage. Meanwhile, trials for Changi Airport’s “passport-free” immigration clearance based on biometric verification are underway, with no official launch date announced yet.
