Biman Bangladesh Weighing Offers from Airbus and Boeing for Widebody Fleet Expansion

Biman Bangladesh Airlines is currently evaluating proposals from Airbus and Boeing as part of its ambitious plan to expand its widebody fleet. While Airbus appears to have an edge, Boeing is making a compelling case to stay in the race.

In its quest to bolster its fleet, Biman Bangladesh Airlines has formed a technical committee tasked with analyzing offers from Airbus and Boeing for widebody aircraft. Although Airbus seems to be leading the race, Boeing is putting up a strong fight.

The committee, consisting of sixteen members including representatives from the Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Aviation and Aerospace University, will scrutinize the proposal to acquire ten A350s, including two A350Fs.

According to reports, Boeing offered Biman two B787-10s powered by General Electric engines, with deliveries slated for the first quarter of 2025. Meanwhile, Airbus proposed two Rolls-Royce-powered A350-900s, with deliveries expected between the second half of 2026 and the first half of 2027.

Despite securing funding for Airbus aircraft in May 2023, Boeing has made a concerted effort to remain in contention, advocating for the potential purchase of various B787s and freighters.

As the committee continues to deliberate, Biman’s managing director, Shafiul Azim, emphasized that no final decision has been reached. The airline aims to expand its fleet to 45 aircraft by 2031, a move aimed at boosting revenue and connectivity.

With 21 aircraft currently in its fleet, including B737s, B777s, B787s, and DHC-8-Q400s, Biman Bangladesh Airlines is poised for significant growth in the coming years.
