Oakland Airport Plans Name Change to Attract More Travelers

In an effort to boost inbound traffic and enhance its geographical recognition, Oakland International Airport (OAK) is gearing up for a name modification. The proposal, put forth by the Port of Oakland, seeks to rebrand the airport as San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport, while retaining its familiar airport code and visual identity.

Following a consultation initiated in the summer of 2023, the Port of Oakland is pushing for approval of the name change, aiming to address a disparity between inbound and outbound demand. Craig Simon, the interim director of aviation at the Port of Oakland, emphasized that market research and feedback from airline partners revealed a need for greater geographic awareness among travelers. This lack of awareness has hindered route performance, leading airlines to hesitate in sustaining and expanding services at Oakland.

With a focus on improving the passenger experience and attracting more domestic and international flights, the airport is not only considering a name change but also planning upgrades to facilities and amenities. These efforts include enhancements to the Terminal 1 check-in area, restroom facilities, and the introduction of new local concessions and restaurants.

The proposed name change has garnered support from key stakeholders, including Southwest Airlines, which holds a significant portion of capacity at the airport. Jennifer Bridie, Vice President of Marketing Communications and Strategy at Southwest, expressed full support for the rebranding initiative, acknowledging Oakland’s economic significance within the San Francisco Bay Area.

Despite being connected to 42 destinations, primarily within the U.S. and Mexico, Oakland Airport has faced challenges in maintaining long-haul international flights since 2019. However, city officials and airport authorities remain optimistic about the potential benefits of highlighting Oakland’s location within the vibrant Bay Area.

Mayor Sheng Thao highlighted the economic impact of the airport, emphasizing the role it plays in job creation and contributing to the local economy. Thao stressed that the proposed name change is not merely cosmetic but a strategic move to attract more travelers, facilitate convenience, and potentially boost tourism in Oakland and the surrounding region.

With passenger numbers showing a modest increase in 2023, the Port Commissioners are set to review the proposed name change at a meeting on April 11. If approved, the airport will proceed with the formal renaming process to become San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport.
