Revolutionizing Air Freight: Tow-Glider Innovation Promises 65% Reduction in Costs

A groundbreaking solution emerges from a West Texas company, poised to revolutionize the air cargo industry by slashing costs by up to 65%. The concept? Utilizing unpowered, autonomous cargo gliders towed behind planes, potentially doubling or even tripling payload capacities.

While the idea may harken back to World War II, where payload-carrying gliders were towed into combat zones, recent advancements offer a modern twist. Texas startup Aerolane proposes purpose-built autonomous cargo gliders connected to lead planes via tow ropes. These “Aerocarts” eliminate the need for propulsion systems, shedding weight and expenses associated with engines, fuel, or batteries.

During flight, the gliders autonomously surf the lead plane’s wake, maximizing efficiency with minimal drag. Upon landing, they either remain connected to the lead plane or detach for independent descent, potentially landing at different airstrips.

Aerolane’s prototypes, already in flight since 2022, demonstrate the viability of this innovative approach. With ongoing efforts to secure FAA approval and plans to develop larger cargo gliders, Aerolane targets initial availability by 2025.
