Sharjah Welcomes its Pioneering Emirati Woman Air Traffic Controller

In a groundbreaking stride for gender inclusivity and professional excellence, Maryam Al Hammadi has made history as the first Emirati woman to assume the role of an Air Traffic Control Officer (ATCO) in Sharjah. With unparalleled dedication and proficiency, Al Hammadi swiftly completed the rigorous training program mandated by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), setting a new benchmark for efficiency and competence.

Over the span of three years since joining the Department of Civil Aviation in Sharjah (DCA), Al Hammadi has not only demonstrated remarkable aptitude but also attained a series of certifications, including ICAO 051, ICAO 052, ATCO Pre-OJT, ATCO OJT, and the ATCO proficiency testing exam. Her swift progression exemplifies the success of the Emiratisation program at DCA, underscoring the institution’s commitment to fostering equal opportunities for both male and female citizens to excel in pioneering domains.

Assigned to oversee aircraft operations at the air traffic control tower in Sharjah Airport, Al Hammadi meticulously ensures the safety and efficiency of flight movements. Last year alone, the Air Control Department at Sharjah Airport managed a staggering 104,000 flights, averaging 364 flights per day, a testament to the pivotal role played by ATCOs in ensuring seamless air traffic management.

In commemorating this milestone, Sheikh Khalid bin Essam Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Sharjah Civil Aviation Department, expressed pride in Al Hammadi’s accomplishment, reaffirming DCA’s unwavering support for women’s empowerment across all sectors. He emphasized that her achievement aligns seamlessly with the visionary leadership’s commitment to fostering gender parity and bolstering women’s participation in driving sustainable economic development.

Reflecting on her historic achievement, Maryam Al Hammadi expressed profound pride in her role as Sharjah’s inaugural Emirati woman ATCO, acknowledging the increased responsibility that accompanies this milestone.
