India’s Urban Air Mobility Project Soars, Targets 2026 Launch
India’s aviation ministry is propelling the urban air mobility project forward, aiming for the country’s first air taxi to soar by 2026. With a keen eye on expanding to major cities like Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, the initiative is gaining momentum under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

In a significant move towards futuristic transportation, India’s aviation ministry has initiated the urban air mobility project, setting a target for the nation’s maiden air taxi to take flight by 2026. Spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration, the project aims to revolutionize urban travel, starting with key metropolitan hubs like Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.
Under the direction of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), several technical committees have been established to pave the way for the seamless integration of air taxis into India’s airspace. Plans are underway to expand the initiative to cities such as Chennai and Hyderabad in subsequent phases, as reported by Times of India.
Furthermore, the expansion of the urban air mobility initiative to cities like Chennai and Hyderabad underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing transportation infrastructure across the country. By extending air taxi services to additional metropolitan areas, India seeks to address urban congestion and improve connectivity, ultimately fostering economic growth and enhancing the overall quality of life for its citizens. IndiGo‘s parent company, InterGlobe Enterprises (IGE), is poised to lead the charge in developing the necessary infrastructure for electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Collaborating with American air taxi manufacturer Archer Aviation, IGE aims to establish a robust framework for eVTOL services ahead of regulatory milestones, positioning India at the forefront of urban air mobility innovation.
Archer Aviation has already engaged with Indian aviation authorities to advance the program’s implementation, while IGE remains in constant communication with regulators to ensure seamless execution. With a commitment to this transformative initiative, IGE’s chief, Rahul Bhatia, has placed a substantial order for 200 Midnight air taxis from Archer, valued at approximately one billion dollars.
Archer’s ambitious timeline includes the commencement of operations in the United States, starting with cities like New York and Chicago, paving the way for a global paradigm shift in urban transportation.
