Gwynne Shotwell, an influential American businesswoman and engineer, is the President and Chief Operating Officer of SpaceX. Born on November 23, 1963, in Evanston, Illinois, Shotwell has carved a remarkable path in the aerospace industry, playing a pivotal role in SpaceX’s journey to the forefront of space exploration.
Raised in Libertyville, Illinois, Shotwell excelled in both academics and athletics, showing early promise in her educational pursuits. Inspired by a mechanical engineer at a Society of Women Engineers panel discussion, she decided to pursue engineering. She graduated from Northwestern University with a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering and a Master of Science in applied mathematics.
Shotwell’s career began in the automotive industry at Chrysler Corporation but soon shifted to aerospace when she joined The Aerospace Corporation in 1988. There, she worked on technical projects and military space research, eventually becoming a leading figure in space systems engineering and project management. In 1998, she moved to Microcosm Inc., where she directed the space systems division.
In 2002, Shotwell joined SpaceX as Vice President of Business Development, quickly proving indispensable. She played a crucial role in developing the Falcon vehicle family and securing significant contracts, including the first Commercial Resupply Services contract with NASA. Her leadership led to her promotion to President and COO in 2008. Under her stewardship, SpaceX achieved numerous milestones, such as the first landing of an orbital rocket’s first stage and the first private company to launch astronauts to orbit in 2020.
Beyond her contributions to SpaceX, Shotwell is a staunch advocate for STEM education, actively supporting various programs and raising substantial funds for scholarships. She serves on several boards, including Polaris Industries and the California Space Authority, and has been recognized with numerous awards, such as the Women in Technology International Hall of Fame induction and inclusion in Time magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world.
In her personal life, Shotwell is married to an engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and has two children.
