A seamless travel experience often begins at the airport, and Dubai International Airport sets the gold standard in passenger comfort and efficiency. With the introduction of smart gates, passengers can now clear immigration in mere seconds.

The airport witnessed a significant increase in traffic, welcoming 23 million passengers in Q1 2024, marking an 8.4% rise from the previous year. Projections indicate that by the end of the year, Dubai International Airport will surpass its previous record of 89.1 million passengers, reaching 91 million.

As the UAE enters its busy summer holiday season, Dubai International Airport is prepared for an influx of travelers. Between June 12 and 25, the airport is expected to accommodate over 3.7 million passengers, averaging 264,000 daily. June 22 is anticipated to be the busiest day, with over 287,000 travelers.

What are Smart Gates?

Smart gates offer a faster alternative to traditional immigration desks. Registered passengers simply stand in a designated area, look into a camera, and follow on-screen instructions. If everything checks out, the gates open, and the passenger can proceed. While many smart gates at Dubai airport don’t require documents, it’s advisable to have your Emirates ID, passport, and boarding pass handy.

Tips for Using Smart Gates

  1. Remove any glasses, caps, or masks.
  2. Stand in the designated zone and look directly into the camera.
  3. Follow on-screen instructions, which may include placing your passport or Emirates ID for scanning.

Eligibility and Fees

There are no additional fees for using smart gates. UAE and GCC nationals, UAE-based expats, and visa-on-arrival guests can use the smart gates. However, individuals under 15 years old, under 1.2 meters in height, people of determination, and guests with large strollers should avoid using the smart gates.

How to Check Your Eligibility

To check if you can use the smart gate, you need one of the following details: File number, UDB number, Emirates ID, or Passport number. Follow these steps:

  1. Visit the GDRFA web page.
  2. Select the relevant option (File number, UDB number, Emirates ID, or Passport number).
