London’s tourism sector is experiencing unprecedented growth, with tourist spending surging by 10.8% in 2023, adding an extra $106.5 million to the local economy.

Tourism London reports a remarkable 10.8% increase in tourist spending for 2023, injecting an additional $106.5 million into the city’s economy compared to 2022. This brings the total annual spending by overnight tourists to $1.08 billion.

Cheryl Finn, Tourism London’s general manager, noted that the city now enjoys a continuous influx of visitors, no longer confined to specific busy seasons. The increase is largely attributed to a diverse array of festivals, concerts, and attractions that London offers, making it a popular destination year-round.

The report highlights a 5% rise in overnight visitors, with around 2.1 million people staying in the city in 2023. This includes a significant number of domestic visitors, as well as 136,000 from the United States and 25,000 from other countries. The city’s status as a UNESCO City of Music has also boosted its profile, particularly in the music and events sector.

London’s international and out-of-town student population further contributes to the tourism boom, as families visiting for graduations and other events spend money on accommodations and dining. Food and drink spending alone accounted for roughly $417 million of the total tourist expenditure last year.

Looking ahead, London is set to host major events such as the Ontario Summer Games and International University Rowing Championships. Finn emphasized the importance of continued collaboration with City Hall, event organizers, and venues to sustain this growth momentum and explore new opportunities for the tourism sector.
