The CAA unveils its strategic plan to modernize UK airspace by 2040, integrating new technologies like drones and VTOL aircraft, aiming to reduce delays and enhance safety.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has detailed its ambitious plans to modernize UK airspace by 2040, initiating a series of projects over the next seven years. The need for this modernization was highlighted in 2019 when National Air Traffic Services (NATS) recorded the busiest-ever day for UK flights.

In January 2023, the CAA released a refreshed Airspace Modernisation Strategy. With air traffic returning to pre-pandemic levels and the rise of new technology like drones, the authority’s latest report, “Airspace Modernisation Strategy, Part 3: Deployment Plan,” outlines this “once-in-a-generation” effort.

Upcoming projects will explore the integration of new airspace users such as drones and VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) aircraft, focusing on safe co-existence with other aircraft and developing technology for collision avoidance.

The CAA will work alongside the Airspace Change Organising Group (ACOG), the Ministry of Defence, and NATS Enroute Limited (NERL), coordinating a comprehensive strategy for air navigation up to 2040. This collaboration aims to modernize and optimize UK airspace usage.

Rob Bishton, chief executive of the CAA, emphasized the complexity of overhauling airspace, noting it requires concerted industry efforts. He highlighted the importance of the plan in enabling new technologies to thrive and providing a framework for coordinated action and accountability.

Aviation Minister Mike Kane stated that modernizing airspace will reduce delays, support decarbonization efforts, and minimize noise. He underscored the urgency of updating an “analogue airspace in a digital age,” calling for immediate action to embrace these innovations.
