Malaysian Transport Ministry to Launch Aviation Decarbonization Roadmap in September
The Transport Ministry will release the National Decarbonization Roadmap for Aviation in September, detailing strategies for adopting sustainable aviation fuel and other eco-friendly practices.
The Transport Ministry, led by Minister Anthony Loke, announced the upcoming launch of a comprehensive roadmap aimed at guiding the aviation sector towards sustainable practices. Scheduled for release in September, the National Decarbonization Roadmap for Aviation outlines strategies for adopting Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and other eco-friendly initiatives.
Presenting the roadmap to the Cabinet on July 31, Minister Loke emphasized its significance in transforming Malaysia into an efficient, environmentally-conscious nation. “This roadmap is a policy and guide for the aviation sector on how we can be a more efficient nation that contributes to decarbonization,” he stated at a ministry event on August 2.
The initiative is expected to stimulate growth in new economic sectors, particularly renewable energy. The blueprint, which received Cabinet approval, will involve collaboration between airlines, airport operators, and other stakeholders. It aligns with the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s (ICAO) Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).
SAF, derived from waste oils and agricultural feedstock, promises to reduce carbon emissions from air travel by up to 80%. The roadmap’s development included extensive input from airline industry stakeholders, ensuring a comprehensive and effective strategy.
