Bahrainis Top the List Among 8.6 Million GCC Visitors to Saudi Arabia in 2023

Saudi Arabia saw a remarkable influx of 8.6 million visitors from GCC countries in 2023, with Bahraini nationals topping the list at 3.4 million. The surge in tourism highlights Saudi Arabia’s efforts to diversify its economy and enhance its tourism sector.

Saudi Arabia welcomed 8.6 million visitors from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries in 2023, with Bahraini travelers making up a significant portion at 3.4 million. The Ministry of Tourism’s data also shows that 2.3 million visitors came from Kuwait, 1.3 million from the UAE, and 1.09 million from Qatar, while 455,000 travelers hailed from Oman.

As part of its strategy to reduce dependence on crude oil, Saudi Arabia is focusing on boosting its tourism sector. The National Tourism Strategy aims to attract 150 million visitors by 2030 and increase tourism’s contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP) from 6% to 10%.

Saudi Minister of Tourism Ahmed Al-Khateeb noted, “The 2023 data reveal that our tourism sector is experiencing remarkable growth and resilience. The statistics shown in the report not only reflect the success of tourism policies but also demonstrate the vibrant economic activity driven by this sector.”

Tourism spending by GCC travelers reached SR15 billion ($4 billion) in 2023. Overall, Saudi Arabia welcomed 109 million tourists last year, with inbound tourists increasing by 64.8% to 27.4 million and outbound tourists rising by 5.2% to 81.9 million. Tourism spending amounted to SR141.2 billion for inbound and SR114.4 billion for outbound tourists.

From Asia and the Pacific, 7.9 million visitors arrived in Saudi Arabia, with Pakistan leading at 2.47 million. In the Middle East, 5.6 million travelers visited, including 2.58 million from Egypt and 1.12 million from Jordan. The US topped the Americas with 331,000 visitors. Algeria led African nations with 523,000 travelers, while Europe contributed 680,000 tourists, with significant numbers from Uzbekistan (540,000) and the UK (370,000).

The influx of tourists has boosted local businesses, from hospitality to retail, significantly invigorating the national economy. As Saudi Arabia continues to enhance its infrastructure and attractions, it is solidifying its position as a leading global destination, fostering economic growth and regional influence.
