Cathay Group is making a significant move to modernize its fleet with an order for 30 Airbus A330-900 widebody aircraft, along with options for an additional 30. This decision underscores Cathay’s commitment to upgrading its mid-size widebody fleet while expanding its presence on high-capacity regional routes. The A330neos will replace the aging A340-300 models, bringing enhanced fuel efficiency and reduced carbon emissions, powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines.

These new aircraft, with a range of 13,330 kilometers, will primarily serve regional destinations in Asia, while retaining the flexibility to operate on longer-haul routes. Designed to use up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), the A330neos align with Cathay’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Cathay Group CEO Ronald Lam emphasized the dual benefits of this fleet upgrade: “The improved fuel efficiency of these A330neos, combined with their high standards of comfort, will allow us to further enhance the passenger experience while contributing to our sustainability goals.”

This fleet expansion comes on the heels of a strong first half of 2024 for Cathay Group. The airline reported a robust performance, driven by high demand for travel and solid cargo operations. Passenger flights have reached 80% of pre-pandemic levels, though the company reported a profit of approximately US$492 million, a slight decrease from US$609 million, attributed to the normalization of ticket prices.
