The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has embarked on a significant investment, commissioning a £20 million ($26 million) anechoic chamber at Boscombe Down, Wiltshire. This state-of-the-art ‘silent hangar’ is designed to enhance the UK military’s ability to protect its assets from electromagnetic threats on the modern battlefield.

The new facility will be capable of housing various military assets, including the Boeing CH-47 Chinook, Protector RG1 UAV, and Lockheed Martin F-35. The chamber will simulate hostile environments, testing the resilience of aircraft systems and other critical equipment against GPS jamming and electronic warfare.

Qinetiq, responsible for the facility’s development, aims to complete the project by 2026. Will Blamey, Qinetiq’s UK Defence CEO, emphasized the importance of this facility in fortifying military defenses in an increasingly digital warfare landscape.

Maria Eagle, the UK’s Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry, underscored the facility’s role in safeguarding national security by eliminating vulnerabilities in military platforms.
