IndiGo Co-Founder Rakesh Gangwal Takes Helm at Southwest Airlines
Rakesh Gangwal, co-founder of IndiGo, steps in as Southwest Airlines’ board chair, reinforcing leadership amid strategic shifts and shareholder agreements.
Rakesh Gangwal, co-founder of IndiGo, has been appointed as the independent Chair of the Board of Directors at Southwest Airlines. Gangwal, who joined the board in July, has also made a significant investment in the airline, acquiring shares worth $108 million through recent transactions at prices between $29 and $30 per share.
This leadership transition comes shortly after Southwest reached a resolution with Elliott Investment Management, one of its largest shareholders, who had called for substantial changes. Gangwal emphasized the board’s unified focus on guiding Southwest towards renewed financial excellence, building on its legacy of success.
CEO and Vice Chairman Bob Jordan will collaborate with Gangwal and the board to strengthen the airline’s strategic direction. Southwest also announced new chairs for various board committees as part of its leadership restructuring.
