Aviation Minister Introduces Bill to Modernize 90-Year-Old Aircraft Act
India introduces a bill to replace the 90-year-old Aircraft Act, focusing on regulatory modernization and attracting investments in the growing aviation sector.
A new bill aimed at replacing the outdated 90-year-old Aircraft Act was introduced in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. The proposed legislation, titled the Bharatiya Vayuyan Vidheyak, 2024, seeks to remove redundancies, streamline regulations, and enhance ease of doing business to attract investments in India’s aviation sector.
Union Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu emphasized the importance of this reform, citing a recommendation from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to update the legislation. He also highlighted the aviation sector’s critical role in driving economic growth and stressed the need to expand the industry.
The bill, which was passed in the Lok Sabha in August, sparked debate in the Rajya Sabha. Opposition members attempted to discuss unrelated issues, including calls for an investigation into allegations of bribery involving a private entity, but were disallowed by the Chair.
The reform aims to modernize India’s aviation policies, aligning them with international standards and fostering greater investment opportunities.
