Joby Aviation is revolutionizing urban air travel with the launch of its flight academy dedicated to training pilots for electric air taxis. The company has achieved FAA Part 141 certification, a pivotal milestone enabling the establishment of the Joby Aviation Academy in Watsonville, California, near its Santa Cruz headquarters.

The academy will offer training programs ranging from private pilot courses to certified flight instructor qualifications. Joby aims to prepare pilots to operate its S4 VTOL (vertical takeoff and landing) aircraft, a cutting-edge design that combines the capabilities of helicopters and airplanes. With zero emissions, reduced noise, and speeds up to 200 mph, the S4 is poised to redefine city transportation.

The initiative coincides with Joby’s partnership with Delta Air Lines to launch an air taxi service for home-to-airport transfers, anticipated to begin next year. The FAA’s recent introduction of a special regulation for powered-lift aircraft pilot training has further paved the way for programs like Joby’s, offering simulator-based training and other tailored approaches to meet the demand for qualified operators.

Joby is already preparing pilots through private pilot ground school, with plans to train commercial airline pilots to operate air taxis in as little as six weeks. The academy will cater to high school, college, and professional-level students, ensuring a steady pipeline of skilled aviators.

The FAA has also approved Joby’s safety management system, covering aircraft, manufacturing, operations, and training, marking significant progress in the company’s path to commercial operations. Further approvals for simulators, training curriculums, and production air taxis are underway as Joby works toward launching its services.

Bonny Simi, Joby’s president of operations and a former airline pilot, emphasized the academy’s role in shaping the future of aviation. “Our competitive pricing and robust training will position graduates for success in this industry,” Simi said.
