Baykar, a leading Turkish company in unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs), has successfully acquired Italian aerospace manufacturer Piaggio Aerospace, expanding its footprint in the European aviation market. This acquisition follows a competitive tender process where Baykar outbid several international competitors, as approved by Italy’s Ministry of Enterprises.

Piaggio Aerospace, established in 1884 and unrelated to the Vespa scooter brand, had been struggling financially and under government-controlled special administration since 2018. Baykar’s bid was selected over two other final offers, as it was considered the best to protect the interests of Piaggio’s workers and creditors, while also revitalizing the company’s industrial potential.

The acquisition is seen as a strategic move by Baykar to expand its aircraft production capacity and to enhance its offerings in technical support, training, and logistics services. Haluk Bayraktar, CEO of Baykar, emphasized that this acquisition brings Turkey’s aviation strength into Europe and provides Piaggio with a path to a prosperous future.

Piaggio Aerospace is renowned for producing the P.180 Avanti business jets and its significant role in Italy’s defense sector, including aircraft engine manufacturing and maintenance. Baykar’s acquisition of Piaggio is poised to provide both companies with expanded operational capabilities and economic benefits, strengthening ties between Turkey and Italy.

The deal is also a testament to the growing prominence of Turkish aviation, with Baykar, known for its Bayraktar TB2 drones, cementing its position as a global leader in unmanned systems. This acquisition enhances Baykar’s production capacity while preserving Piaggio’s 140-year legacy in aviation.

Baykar’s drone exports are at the forefront of global markets, with the Bayraktar TB2 being the most widely exported combat drone worldwide. As the Turkish defense industry continues to rise, this acquisition will further boost the country’s aerospace capabilities, driving innovation and employment opportunities in both Italy and Turkey.
