The China Airshow in Zhuhai saw the debut of one of the most exciting aircraft in the eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) sector: the ANN 6. Developed by Italy’s Manta Aircraft, this hybrid-electric HeV/STOL (hybrid-electric short takeoff and landing) aircraft combines luxury, versatility, and eco-friendly technology. The ANN 6’s innovative hybrid propulsion system, featuring a small gas turbine and a lightweight battery, allows it to operate efficiently over inter-regional routes without the need for recharging at every stop.

With its hybrid-electric powertrain, the ANN 6 is designed to be more adaptable than traditional all-electric eVTOLs. Its ability to recharge in-flight means that it is not dependent on existing charging infrastructure, a major advantage for operations in remote areas. The aircraft can also run on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), reducing its carbon footprint compared to conventional aircraft. In the future, it will be compatible with hydrogen power sources, further enhancing its eco-friendly capabilities.

The ANN 6 is not just about performance; it’s also about luxury. The aircraft’s cabin is crafted with premium materials like Nappa leather, Alcantara, and carbon fiber, offering a high-end experience for passengers. The interior can be customized with various options, from ambient lighting to seat embroidery, making each flight a personalized experience.

In terms of performance, the ANN 6 stands out with a range of up to 300 km (186 miles) in VTOL mode and 1,000 km (620 miles) when utilizing a short airstrip for STOL operations. This makes it ideal for a range of missions, from intercity travel to emergency services and offshore logistics.

The debut of the ANN 6 comes after a collaboration between Manta Aircraft and Shenyang Aviation Industries Group to accelerate the development of the aircraft. The partnership will also work on obtaining certification from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), paving the way for the ANN 6’s entry into the Chinese and South Asian markets.

At the airshow, Manta displayed a full-scale mock-up of the ANN 6, which is designed to serve the business and personal mobility sectors. The ANN family of aircraft also includes the ANN 2, a two-seat version for general aviation, and the ANN drone, which is intended for autonomous operations.
