Austria is advancing its military airlift capabilities by acquiring four Embraer C-390 Millennium aircraft, which will replace the aging C-130K Hercules fleet. The first aircraft is expected to be delivered by 2026. This purchase is part of a joint procurement agreement with the Netherlands, strengthening European defense cooperation and enhancing air mobility for both military and humanitarian operations.
The C-390 Millennium offers superior payload capacity, faster speeds, and reduced operational costs compared to older airlifters. With its high-wing design, it excels in cargo handling and short-field performance, making it highly versatile. Additionally, the aircraft includes advanced avionics, self-protection systems, and the ability to perform medical evacuations and aerial refueling.
Austria’s €600 million deal, which includes five aircraft for the Netherlands, highlights the growing confidence in the C-390’s capabilities. Already in use by several NATO-aligned countries, the C-390 Millennium is expected to play a central role in Austria’s military fleet, enhancing its ability to respond efficiently to both military and humanitarian crises.
