Airbus Helicopters has launched the H140, a new light twin-engine rotorcraft aimed at expanding its market presence. A growth variant of the popular H135, the H140 offers improved features such as an expanded cabin, higher cruise speed, and smoother flight dynamics. The new model is expected to be particularly appealing to emergency medical services and other commercial operators, thanks to its 20% larger cabin and new design enhancements.
Building on Airbus’s successful H145 and the technological advancements from the Blue-copter program, the H140 introduces innovations like a sleek tail boom design and a five-blade main rotor for better ride quality. Additionally, the new rotorcraft uses the Safran Arrius 2E engine, which offers lower operating costs and improved performance. The H140’s design aims to balance cost and performance by maintaining a compact footprint and enhancing payload capacity.
Airbus’s strategy is to offer a versatile and competitive product to the light twin-engine rotorcraft market. The H140, expected to enter service in 2028, will first target the emergency medical services sector. Its lightweight design and optimized maintenance plans promise reduced operating costs, while its spacious cabin and advanced avionics suite ensure a smooth flying experience. The H140 will complement the H135 in Airbus’s lineup, addressing growing market demands for more efficient rotorcraft.
The H140 will be manufactured at Airbus’s facility in Donauworth, Germany, alongside the H135 and H145. With its innovative features and customer-driven design, Airbus is positioning the H140 as a key player in the rotorcraft market, especially for customers seeking higher performance without compromising on operational costs.
