Delhi International Airport (DIAL) is gearing up to test advanced full-body scanners at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) starting in May, in line with new guidelines from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). Four cutting-edge scanners will be installed, with two at Terminal 1 (T1) and two at Terminal 3 (T3), marking a significant step towards enhanced airport security.

These new scanners, based on millimeter-wave technology operating between 70-80 GHz, promise to offer a higher level of security without compromising passengers’ privacy. Unlike traditional X-ray scanners, the advanced models do not emit harmful radiation, making them completely safe for all passengers, including pregnant women and individuals with medical implants.

The scanners can detect both metallic and non-metallic threats, including explosives, offering a more comprehensive solution compared to conventional metal detectors. Each scan will take just three seconds, with the scanners capable of handling up to 1,200 passengers per hour. This system aims to reduce wait times, ensuring a smoother travel experience.

DIAL’s CEO, Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, highlighted that this initiative is part of the airport’s ongoing commitment to adopting cutting-edge technology to improve security and passenger convenience. After the 3-4 month trial period, BCAS will assess the results and decide on the broader implementation of this technology.
