In an escalation of the ongoing conflict, Israel’s military launched a second wave of airstrikes on Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, on Monday, claiming to have completely incapacitated the city’s international airport. The Israeli strikes are a direct response to a missile attack launched by the Houthi rebels, which targeted Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport on Sunday.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stated that their airstrikes were focused on critical infrastructure, with the Sanaa airport being severely damaged to the point where it is now deemed “fully disabled.” Israeli officials indicated that the attack aimed to send a clear message to the Houthis, demonstrating Israel’s resolve to protect its territory against what it considers hostile actions from groups supported by Iran. The military operation was a carefully calibrated response, meant to cripple Yemen’s ability to carry out further missile operations against Israeli targets.

The missile that prompted the airstrikes was fired by Houthi rebels, a group known for its ongoing military activities in Yemen’s protracted civil war. The missile targeted Ben Gurion Airport, Israel’s primary international gateway, though it did not result in significant damage or casualties. Despite the relatively low impact of the missile strike, Israeli officials are treating the attack with utmost seriousness, viewing it as a significant provocation. The missile’s trajectory and launch point suggested coordination with external actors, which further fueled Israel’s concerns about the involvement of Iran-backed militias in the region.

The attack on Sanaa airport is the latest in a series of military strikes between Israel and Houthi rebels, which have steadily intensified over the past few years. Yemen’s ongoing civil war, exacerbated by the involvement of various regional powers, has created a volatile environment, with the Houthis increasingly targeting Israel as part of their broader anti-Israel stance. The conflict, already devastating for Yemen, has now spilled over into wider regional tensions.
