AAI Plans Massive Airport Upgrade to Boost Growth
The Airports Authority of India is upgrading 150 small airports and airstrips to improve passenger and cargo traffic, with enhancements in runways, cargo facilities, and digital systems.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has outlined a plan to modernize 150 underutilized airports and airstrips nationwide. This move aims to enhance infrastructure to meet growing demands in passenger traffic and air cargo.
Airports including Belagavi, Hubballi, Aizawl, Kota, and Rajahmundry are among the selected locations. The modernization will prioritize cargo handling to support industries such as pharmaceuticals, textiles, and electronics, requiring rapid transport amidst changing trade dynamics.
Infrastructure upgrades will focus on runway expansion, passenger facilities adhering to International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, and the adoption of digital technologies. Satellite freight cities with multimodal transport connections, cold storage, and automated cargo systems are also planned to facilitate streamlined logistics.
This initiative reflects India’s commitment to boosting aviation infrastructure and positioning smaller airports as critical hubs for both passenger and cargo traffic.
