ST. LOUIS—Boeing has commenced construction on a 1.1 million square-foot Advanced Combat Aircraft Facility at Lambert International Airport, aimed at supporting future U.S. air dominance programs. Despite the lack of specific contracts, Boeing is moving forward with the $1.8 billion project to meet anticipated demand for next-generation military aircraft.

Steve Nordland, VP of Boeing’s Air Dominance programs, indicated the facility is designed exclusively for highly classified projects and will not be used for international orders. The speculative nature of this venture highlights Boeing’s commitment to maintaining a competitive edge in U.S. military contracts, despite uncertainties in program funding and timelines.

The Air Force’s recent request for proposals for the NGAD program included Boeing, but contract awards remain uncertain. Similarly, the Navy has reduced its budget for the F/A-XX program, adding to the ambiguity surrounding future funding. Should Boeing not secure these contracts, repurposing the facility for commercial aircraft manufacturing would be challenging.

Boeing’s investment in this high-security plant underscores the importance of industrial base considerations in defense spending decisions. As the construction progresses, Boeing remains hopeful that its proactive measures will align with future military needs.
